By Executive Order dated August 23, 2006, Governor Jon S. Corzine established the Advisory Committee on Police Standards – a 20-member body charged with recommending whether, and under what circumstances, the State of New Jersey should join with the United States Department of Justice in filing a motion to terminate the consent decree concerning the practice of racial profiling by New Jersey State Police. The Advisory Committee is also to examine issues related to local law enforcement. As part of this inquiry, the Advisory Committee has held four public hearings, and plans to hold two additional hearings. The Advisory Committee will also receive written comments and testimony.

The Advisory Committee’s next public hearing will be held on Thursday, April 26, 2007 from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM at the Paul Robeson Campus Center of Rutgers University in Newark. Public parking is available in garages at 249 University Avenue and the intersection of Washington Street and Warrant Street. Nearby public transportation is available via train to Newark-Penn Station and the Newark City Subway (Washington Street stop).

This public hearing will focus on testimony about local law enforcement. There will be public comment sessions from approximately 1:00 to 2:00 PM and 3:30 to 4:30 PM, during which any member of the public may testify before the Advisory Committee.
