Centennial of Cooperative Extension's Establishment

WHEREAS
, the Smith-Lever Act of 1914 established the Cooperative Extension Service, a state-by-state national network of extension educators who extend the university-based research and knowledge to the people in the counties through a nationwide educational network involving the collaboration of federal, state and local governments and a state land-grant university; and

WHEREAS, the mission of the Cooperative Extension System is to disseminate research-based information on topics as varied as nutrition and health, youth development, agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry, small business and personal finance through a central state Extension office at the state land-grant university and county offices staffed by professionals in each of the U.S. states and territories; and

WHEREAS, the county Cooperative Extension Offices, units of the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station of Rutgers University, serve residents through faculty and staff providing educational programs and research to meet the needs of each county; and

WHEREAS, for 100 years, the Smith-Lever Act has stimulated innovative research and vital educational programs for youth and adults through progressive information delivery systems that have improved lives and help shape a nation; and 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the delegates to the 99th State Agricultural Convention, assembled in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on February 5-6, 2014, recognize the 100th Anniversary of the Smith-Lever Act that established Cooperative Extension.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we honor and thank the faculty and staff, past and present, of Rutgers Cooperative Extension who serve residents of all ages and that we encourage Rutgers Cooperative Extension to continue to grow in awareness and support so that those residents continue to reap the benefits and services provided by Cooperative Extension.
