Governor
Christine Todd Whitman has declared April 30 through
May 7 as Soil and Water Stewardship Week in New
Jersey (proclamation follows). Agriculture Secretary
Art Brown, who also chairs the State Soil Conservation
Committee (SSCC), commended the state's 16 local
soil conservation districts (SCDs), as well as
farmers and landowners, for their efforts to preserve
New Jersey's soil and water resources. "This week
gives us a chance to thank these people for the
work they do to make sure that New Jersey remains
a productive state in harmony with a quality environment," Brown
said. Soil and Water Stewardship Week is designed
to highlight the importance of soil and water resources
to all New Jerseyans. In addition, it focuses attention
on the work done throughout the year by the SSCC
and the SCDs statewide in conjunction with the
USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service and
related agencies. NJDA's Natural Resource Conservation
and Development Program oversees programs that
support the conservation and management of soil,
water and related resources; improve water supply
for agricultural production; prevent non-point
source pollution resulting from all land use disturbances;
provide watershed management and land treatment;
and facilitate the recycling of organic wastes
through controlled application to agricultural
lands.
