3.7 Where to Get Help for Communication Disorders

If you have trouble locating a licensed speech language pathologist or audiologist, assistance can be obtained by contacting the

Financial Assistance:

Possible financial assistance may be available for the partial or total payment of hearing and speech rehabilitative services or communication devices such as hearing aids. It should be noted that most Governmental and insurance plans covering speech language pathology and audiology services require a medical referral to qualify for funding. Possible sources of funding are listed below.

  • Medicare - Medical Insurance (Part B) can help pay for physical/occupational therapy and speech pathology services. Medical Insurance (Part B) cannot pay for hearing examinations or for prescribing and fitting hearing aids.
  • Medicaid - Will cover speech language evaluations and treatment, hearing tests, hearing aid evaluations, and the purchase of hearing aids.
  • Private Insurance Policies - Coverage varies widely according to the policy. Contact your insurance carrier for further information.
  • Veterans' Administration - Rehabilitative services and hearing aids may be covered if individuals are eligible veterans.
  • NJ Dept of Labor, Dividion of Vocational Rehabilitation Services - Possible funding for speech and hearing services and devices may be available for eligible individuals.
