Caregivers Guide

A Guide for Family Caregivers of Older New Jersey Residents

Section 5 - Assessing the Future Situation

Contents | Previous Page | Next Page

5.0 Introduction

In this section participants examine and summarize the con tent of previous sections. They describe their feelings about their situation and the results of participating in the program. Participants discuss possible strategies, such as asking for supplemental help from the formal system of service providers to decrease strain; forming an informal support peer group; advocacy for unavailable services; and investigation of structures which help fill service gaps.

In the preceding sections you received practical, comprehensive information to sensitize and acquaint you with some very real needs that caregivers must address. This material has been offered to help you cope better with your situation. This information, however, represents just the tip of the iceberg.

"What do I still need to know or do in order to become more effective, efficient and competent in my role as a caregiver?"... only you can answer this question.

Several decisions should now be made regarding future needs and plans of action. The information gathered in the previous sections must now be examined for its relevance to your specific situation, then appropriately applied and implemented. Equally important, you must identify the additional information you need. You must ask the question, "What do I still need to know or do in order to become more effective, efficient and competent in my role as a caregiver?" No one knows your needs better than you do, so only you can answer this question. By the end of this section, you will be prepared to independently and confidently seek and acquire the strategies, skill, services and supports that are necessary to bolster and assist you in your caregiving role.
