Kinship Navigator
Kinship caregivers are special people who have taken on the responsibility
of caring for their relatives’ children - these children
might be the caregiver’s siblings, nieces, nephews, or,
most often, grandchildren. The
Department of Human Services offers a variety of support services
and financial aid to kinship caregivers. For example, kinship
caregivers are eligible for monthly payments through the federal
Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) program. The children
may also be eligible for Medicaid health insurance. Visit the
Kinship
Navigator program’s website to learn more about how
this program helps kinship caregivers negotiate the labyrinth
of government and community resources that may be available to
them. This toll-free service helps kinship caregivers identify
available resources and then advocates on their behalf to access
those services. In addition, the Navigator helps administer support
programs created specifically for kinship caregivers, including
cash assistance, child care subsidies, and wraparound services.
