Purpose: It was the goal of the New Jersey Department of Education in 2007 to create a new discretionary grant program to build upon the successes of the 2003-2006 Tech-Prep Grant Program. Through a limited competitive discretionary grant, Carl D. Perkins federal funds were distributed to eight secondary school districts in New Jersey for the purpose of developing new Tech-Prep programs of study or modifying existing CTE programs in accordance with federal regulations [Section 203(c)(2)(A)-(G)], and the definitions of concentrators and completers set forth by the NJDOE. These eight school districts will be provided with continued funding from 2007-2010. As a result of this grant opportunity, New Jersey increased the number of Tech-Prep consortia in the state and provided more opportunities for students to: prepare for high skill, high wage occupations in five broad industry areas where there was a workforce shortage; meet high academic and employability competencies [Section 204(d)(5)]; and, transition into postsecondary education and eventual work [Section 203(c)(2)(F)]. The multi-year Tech-Prep Grant Program also assisted the state in obtaining more accurate data to describe Tech-Prep program success.
Eligible Agencies: Each lead agency (LEA) whose grant application was funded in year two of the Tech-Prep multi-year grant program will be eligible to apply for continuation funding in year three of the grant program.
