Education
Among the leading educational facilities in Mercer County are Princeton University, The College of New Jersey (formerly Trenton State College), Rider University, Mercer County Community College and Thomas Edison State College. These institutions and several of the larger public districts offer extensive opportunities for adult and continuing education. Preparatory schools include the nationally renown Lawrenceville School, The Hun School of Princeton and The Peddie School in Hightstown. Mercer County is home to nine public school districts, comprising 94 schools, employing 3,597 teachers for and enrollment of 50,029 students. (QED State School Guide: New Jersey 1996 - 1997). These districts vary greatly in terms of resources and records, with very high state rankings for West Windsor, where 94.9% of student passed the High School Proficiency Test (HSPT) and problem areas targeted by the state in Trenton, where 26.8% of students passed the HSPT. Most districts are now offering a full day Kindergarten, a major benefit to working families.
