TRENTON, N.J. -Mercer County Executive Brian M. Hughes is urging County residents to participate in the holiday food drive for needy veterans.

"Right now our troops are sacrificing a tremendous amount for this country," the County Executive stressed. "Giving people who have defended the safety and liberty of their fellow country people a few dollars to buy a holiday meal is an ideal way to show our gratitude and an appropriate way to commemorate Veterans Day this November 11."

Mercer County Veteran Services will collect donations from County residents from now until Nov. 19, and will use these funds to purchase and distribute vouchers for food products from Marazzo's Thriftway in Ewing to veterans and their families before the Thanksgiving holiday. Leftover proceeds will fund similar efforts for Christmas and Easter.

Last year, Veteran Services collected over $3,000 in support of providing Thanksgiving meals for veterans; rather than vouchers, however, the money was used to purchase food items for distribution to recipients.

Hughes worked with the Board of Chosen Freeholders and Veteran Services to supply over 100 veterans and their families with turkeys and side dishes for Thanksgiving dinner. County officials distributed food at the Trenton Veteran Center on Parkway Avenue two days prior to the Thanksgiving holiday.

"Providing needy veterans and their families with a nice Thanksgiving meal is easy to do," said Hughes. "Just a few dollars can buy quite a bit of potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and other traditional holiday foods. Even if you only have a couple of dollars to give, you can make a big difference for our veterans this holiday season."

To donate, please send checks made out to Mercer County Trust Fund and mail or hand deliver to Mercer County Veteran Services, 2280 Hamilton Avenue, Hamilton, NJ 08619. For more information about donating, call (609) 989-6120. Veterans wishing to know whether or not they are eligible to receive a food voucher can call Darryl Johnson at the Trenton Vet Center, (609) 882-5744.
