TRENTON, N.J. - The Visual Arts Tour of The Mercer County Teen Arts Festival will soon make its third stop as the roving exhibit continues. The show, which features works from dozens of local middle and high school students, can be seen beginning Friday, October 10, at ArtWorks Gallery located at 19 Everett Alley, Trenton. An opening reception will be held that evening from 7 to 9.
This exhibit, as well as all the artwork selected for the county wide tour, features works of art created by local students which were selected for the exhibit by approximately 40 professional artists who attended the annual Mercer County Teen Arts Festival, held May 16 at Mercer County Community College. The guest artists are professionals in a variety of disciplines, including visual art, communications, film and video, dance, drama, vocal and instrumental music, and creative writing.
The Visual Arts Exhibit at the ArtWorks Gallery is new this year to the countywide tour of student artwork. The first stops on the tour included the "Art All Night" Celebration, June 21-22 at Millyard Park in Trenton, and the Erdman Gallery of the Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, July 13-Sept. 16.
"The Visual Arts Exhibit at the ArtWorks Gallery is another fine venue through which we can share the considerable artistic talents of our young people in Mercer County," said Mercer County Executive Brian M. Hughes. "This exhibit is open for a limited time, so I encourage anyone who appreciates art to view this collection."
The exhibit includes 31 selected works from students who attend Crockett Middle School in Hamilton, Trenton Catholic Academy in Hamilton, Daylight/Twilight High School in Trenton, and John Witherspoon Middle School in Princeton. The exhibit will be on display from October 10-20th.
The ArtWorks Gallery is located at 19 Everett Alley in Trenton, New Jersey, in the historic Mill Hill district. A visual arts center, ArtWorks offers classes, exhibitions, and workspace for artists. The ArtWorks Gallery is accessible and open to the public Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m.
The Mercer County Teen Arts Festival is a one-day event held annually on the West Windsor Campus of Mercer County Community College. The Festival is a comprehensive "arts in education" program open to all Mercer County public, private, parochial, and home-school students in middle and high school, grades 6-12, or ages 13 to 19. This year, 17 schools participated, including approximately 1,300 students.
The focus of the festival is not on competition, but on participation in performance and critiquing seminars, master classes and workshops in art, dance, drama, vocal and instrumental music, film and creative writing. The program aims to help students develop perceptual, intellectual and technical skills; gain cultural awareness and understanding; develop personal aesthetic values; and learn self-discipline, critical thinking, and problem solving through analyzing, interpreting and making judgments.
The Visual Arts Tour will conclude with a display at the Arts Showcase on October 25 at the Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton.
