TRENTON, N.J.—Mercer County Park Commission’s new naturalist-led Nature Programs are proving to be a big success judging by the number of people who have signed up for the array of offerings, and as a result, Mercer County has further expanded its offerings.

Mercer County’s park trails have always been well traveled, but under the guidance of the Mercer County naturalist, users are encouraged to interact with their surroundings by looking for wildlife or discovering a new trail. Programs are filling quickly, so interested participants are encouraged to sign up soon. Registration is required.

“These new programs are a great way for people who love our parks to expand their exploration and for people new to our parks to receive an orientation from our trained staff. Our goal is to provide our park visitors with the best experience available,” Hughes said.

Program offerings vary, from brisk trail hikes at Baldpate Mountain to pond explorations and discovery-oriented preschool programs. “Sunday Strolls” are relaxed, family-oriented trailside programs, and “Tuesday Treks” are invigorating hikes. The nature programs and activities are simple yet exciting, and there are activities for all ages.

Upcoming offerings include:

Tuesday Trail Trek; Tuesday, March 31 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Baldpate Mountain, Visitor Center Parking Lot. Become inspired by nature; get motivated to exercise, or join us to discover new hiking trails.  Mercer County is bursting with beautiful parkland and is here for your enjoyment.  Take in fresh air, energize your body and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature with Mercer County’s Naturalist on Tuesday morning treks.  Wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring a water bottle.  For adults. Free.

Sunday Stroll: Slimy Salamanders; Sunday April 5, 10 to 11:30 a.m., Rosedale Park Picnic Area. For families. $4 per person.
Put down the newspaper and lace up yours and your little one’s sneakers.  Spend time as a family and grow closer while playing in nature.  This month’s relaxed Sunday program will send your family along the trail in search of some amazing amphibians, specifically salamanders.  We’ll learn the “friendly” way to roll logs, turn rocks and move leaf litter in search of these slimy creatures.

Early Birds, Monday, April 6 from 7 to 8:30 a.m., at Baldpate Mountain, Visitor Center Parking Lot
Join us for a casual hike -- with your binoculars, of course.  This early-morning walk is dedicated to spotting our fine-feathered friends.  Never picked up a pair of binoculars before?  No problem. All abilities of birders are welcome.  For adults. Free.
