TRENTON, N.J. — May is Older Americans Month and Mercer County Executive Brian M. Hughes, other officials and residents will celebrate on May 6, 2011 at Grandparent’s Grove in Mercer County Park, West Windsor from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

As the nation acknowledges this year’s theme “Older Americans: Connecting the Community,” Mercer County will acknowledge the multiple achievements of its older adults, their caregivers and those providing their much-needed supportive services.

The Park’s Marina area, that includes Grandparents Grove that oversees Mercer Lake at South Post Road, will be the site of local entertainment, exercise demonstrations and opportunities to network with others about aging in Mercer County.

Since the enactment of the Older Americans Act in 1965, older Americans have been formally recognized in May as the roots of vibrant communities, pioneers in the increased acceptance of home and community based services, and vigilantes in the perseverance of contributing to their community’s greater good.  We further recognize the changes that concern so many; increased concerns about Social Security and Medicare, Reauthorization of the Older Americans Act and the impact of the Affordable Care Act for older Americans everywhere.  The Mercer County Office on Aging is available to assist and direct you to services that will help you grow old with us in Mercer County. For more information, call 609-989-6661.

Stop by and say hello, listen to a tune or two, exercise with Silver Sneakers and meet some new friends!

Kindly note that this is a sunny day only event; it will be cancelled if there is inclement weather. A message will be posted after business hours on Thursday, May 5 as to the status of the event. Call 989-6661 or 989-6662 to check this message.
