TRENTON, N.J. - Mercer County Executive Brian M. Hughes hosted a countywide kickoff today for the 2013 March for Babies, the March of Dimes’ largest fundraiser. Hughes welcomed national March of Dimes child ambassador Nina Centofanti, 8, of Mason, Ohio, who is touring the country with her parents to help March for Babies fundraising.

“The March of Dimes has made such great strides over the years,” Hughes told the gathering. “Even in the U.S., where healthcare has become very advanced, we still have far too many children being born prematurely. Premature birth can devastate a child’s chances of growing up in a normal fashion.

“We’ve got a child here who was born prematurely but has grown up in quite a normal fashion -- I can tell by the way she likes to run around and have a good time. I want to thank you for being here today, U.S. ambassador!”

Begun in 1970, March for Babies (formerly WalkAmerica) raises funds to promote awareness and prevention of premature birth and related birth defects. Individuals or groups can sign up to participate in the walk, and can use a variety of online and hard-copy materials to raise money for the March of Dimes. Mercer County will host this year’s five-mile walk in Mercer County Park in West Windsor on Sunday, April 21.

Hughes encouraged all County employees to find a way to participate in this year’s March of Dimes campaign, whether by donning sneakers and going the five miles for March for Babies, by donating money or volunteer time to the March of Dimes, or by coordinating fundraising efforts in the office.

“At the March for Babies, you’ll walking for the people in your life whom you might never have gotten the chance to love were it not for the March of Dimes,” Hughes said.
