Meet the Clerk
Paula Sollami Covello was sworn-in as the Mercer County Clerk in January 2006, following her election in November, 2005.
She is an Attorney-at-Law, who was admitted to practice in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia. She has spent the majority of her career working in government, first in the Governor's Office as a policy advisor to the Governor and Assistant Director to the National Governors' Association Conference, Princeton. She worked for six years in the New Jersey Department of Education, serving as the first Executive Director of the New Jersey School Ethics Commission, drafting its operating regulations and authoring several landmark decisions affecting board of education members and school administrators Statewide. She also wrote legal opinions for the Commissioner of Education, in the Controversies and Disputes Office. She worked as an Assistant County Counsel for Mercer County as well, representing the County in various administrative hearings.
Ms. Sollami Covello also practiced law privately at the law firm of Schwartz Simon Edelstein Celso & Kessler in Florham Park, NJ. There, she concentrated her practice in Education Law, representing various school board clients.
Ms. Sollami Covello graduated from Ewing High School and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Villanova University, in Pennsylvania, where she earned a double major in English and Communication Arts. She earned her Juris Doctor degree from New England School of Law in Boston, Massachusetts.
Ms. Sollami Covello is the daughter of former Mercer County Freeholder and attorney, Paul J. Sollami and Roseann Bruno Sollami. She and her husband, John A. Covello, reside in Lawrence Township New Jersey, and have two daughters.
She is active in the community, having served on the Lawrence Township Planning Board and as an elected Democratic Committeewoman. She served in leadership positions with the New Jersey State Bar Association, Young Lawyers Division, the Womanspace Honorary Committee, and currently with the Mercer County Heartwalk Executive Committee. She was president of the Mercer County Federation of Democratic Women from 2003 to 2005. Ms. Sollami Covello also enjoys membership in the Mercer County Bar Association, the Mercer County Sons of Italy organization, and the Lawrence League of Women Voters.
Her hobbies include swimming, reading, traveling, cooking, spending time with family and cheering on her daughters' soccer teams.

Accomplishments in office:
- Eliminated an 11-year record-keeping backlog in 10 weeks
- Provided the leadership to fix all records & books to end an 11-year lawsuit filed against Mercer County
- Offered electronic record-filing through a multi-county shared services contract, saving taxpayer money
- Offered faster, more convenient, and more efficient online recording searching and retrieval operations
- Modernized office equipment and enhanced work and public areas of the Clerk’s Office, including handicapped accessibility.
- Offered passport and notary services at a satellite office of County government – the Mercer County Connection – and took passport processing on the road to local towns
- Expanded office hours for the public to 3 nights a week, plus Saturdays
- Helped veterans record discharge papers and began offering veteran ID cards
- Expanded vote-by-mail so voters in record numbers have a paper option to voting machines and offered satellite locations for vote-by-mail processing
