Stephanie R. Bush

Stephanie R. Bush, the tenth Commissioner of DCA, was appointed by Governor James J. Florio in 1992.

A practicing attorney, Commissioner Bush was serving in the Assembly at the time of her appointment, after her election in 1987 and re-election in 1989 and 1991. She received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Cornell University and received her law degree from American University in 1978.

While in the Legislature, Bush sponsored the Family Leave Act, which requires employers to provide job security and benefits to employees who take time off to care for a new child or a sick family member, and sponsored legislation to raise the minimum wage. She also served as president of the New Jersey Association of Black Woman Lawyers.
