Harriet E. Derman 

Harriet E. Derman, the eleventh Commissioner of DCA, was appointed by Governor Christine Todd Whitman in 1994.

At the time of her appointment, Commissioner Derman was serving in the Assembly, where she was elected in 1991 and re-elected in 1993.  She was also a practicing attorney who served as president of the Middlesex County Bar Association, as first vice chairwoman of the New Jersey State Bar Association, as a member of the Supreme Court Ethics Committee for Middlesex County, as a director of the New Jersey Women Lawyers Association, and as a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel.

In 1996, Derman was appointed by Governor Whitman as her chief counsel and then as her chief of staff. She was later appointed Judge of the Superior Court of New Jersey in 1998.
