DCA Commissioner Grifa Joins Volunteers to Build

Children's Playground in Paterson

Children of Eva's Village Will Have Safe, Fun Place to Play

PATERSON, N.J. – New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA) Commissioner Lori Grifa today joined volunteers to help build a playground for the children of Eva's Village, an affordable housing community in Paterson for low-income households and formerly homeless individuals. The event was part of a joint effort from national non-profit playground organization KaBOOM!, the Kraft Foods Foundation, and the Eva's Village children to create a safe and fun environment that incorporates designs by the children themselves.

"The children of Eva's Village worked very hard and put extensive thought and creativity into this project," said Commissioner Grifa. "They deserve a safe and inviting place to play that is within walking distance, and they now have that thanks to an enthusiastic, energetic group of volunteers. This playground will encourage outside activities, which are so vital to the physical and social health of children."

The DCA and New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency, a DCA affiliate, provided more than $11 million in financing for Eva's Village through a combination of state and federal funding programs. Eva's Village, which opened in December 2010, provides 50 units of affordable housing to disadvantaged families, homeless or transitional individuals, and individuals living with HIV/AIDS. To meet the residents' needs, the building is equipped with all essential utilities, including full bathrooms, kitchenettes, laundry facilities, security features, and an elevator. With the addition of the new playground, Eva's Village is now equipped to meet children's needs as well.
