Project Provides 12 Apartments Financed with Sandy Recovery Funds

New Brunswick, NJ – New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency (NJHMFA) staff today joined local officials to celebrate the ribbon-cutting of Zebra Way, a new 12-unit apartment building that provides supportive housing for homeless individuals and families.

Residents are anticipated to begin moving in the first week of April. The two-story, ADA-compliant building has 10 one-bedroom units with rents set at $230 and two, two-bedroom units with rents set at $460. Five of the housing units are supported by federal Shelter Plus Care vouchers, which assist homeless individuals with disabilities.

The $3.5 million project, which was developed by Bergen County’s United Way/Madeline Corporation and Coming Home of Middlesex County, Inc., is close to two hospitals, local businesses, public transit, Rutgers University, and several elementary schools. Triple C Housing Inc. will administer social services provided to tenants.

“Zebra Way provides much needed supportive housing to help residents regain stability and get back on their feet,” said NJHMFA Executive Director Charles A. Richman.

NJHMFA awarded the project $2.2 million in federal Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) monies through the Sandy Special Needs Housing Fund, which was created to help develop permanent supportive housing in counties most impacted by Superstorm Sandy. The project also includes $840,000 from Middlesex County’s Housing First Capital Fund and $450,000 in City of New Brunswick HOME Investment Partnership Program funds.

Bergen County’s United Way and Madeline Corporation have previously partnered with NJHMFA on the award-winning Dina's Dwellings project in New Brunswick, which provides supportive housing for women and children who are domestic violence survivors. Coming Home of Middlesex County, Inc. is the single coordinating entity for homeless services in the county.

NJHMFA is an affiliate of the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs and has been a leader in the creation and rehabilitation of nearly 100,000 affordable housing units across the state. For more information on NJHMFA and its programs, visit www.njhousing.gov.
