DCA and NJHT Announce $1.2 Million Available for Historic Preservation Grants

TRENTON, N.J. – New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA) Acting Commissioner Richard E. Constable III today announced the New Jersey Historic Trust is now accepting applications for Historic Site Management Grants from the Garden State Historic Preservation Trust Fund. Eligible properties are historic sites that are listed, or are eligible for listing, in the New Jersey or National Register of Historic Places. Guidelines and applications are now posted on the website of the NJ Historic Trust, a DCA affiliated agency, at www.njht.org.

"The Historic Trust is eager to help facilitate the preservation of worthy projects by offering this latest grant round, which we know will be highly competitive," said Acting Commissioner Constable. "The grants will enable stewards of historic property in New Jersey to plan for the future restoration, repair and responsible management of their important sites."

Historic Site Management Grants, which range from $5,000 to $50,000, may be used to fund the preparation of plans and studies needed to improve site stewardship, maintenance and interpretation. The grants are available for eligible recipients such as certified nonprofit organizations and agencies of state, county or municipal government. Grant recipients are required to provide matching funds.

"These planning grants allow historic sites to explore new uses and heritage tourism possibilities, as well as produce preservation plans and construction drawings that guide bricks-and-mortar construction projects," said Chris Perks, Historic Trust chair. "Applicants are strongly encouraged to read the grant guidelines or attend the applicant workshop prior to applying."

Potential applicants and professional consultants are invited to attend an applicant workshop from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on July 18, 2012 at the Rutgers EcoComplex in Bordentown. Participants may register to attend by calling (609) 984-0473 or by emailing njht@dca.state.nj.us.

DCA & NJ Historic Trust Launch CAPITAL NEEDS SURVEY for New Jersey Historic Sites

TRENTON, N.J. – New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA) Acting Commissioner Richard E. Constable III today announced the launch of a new Capital Needs Survey that will collect information on the repair, restoration and improvement needs of historic sites throughout the state. The New Jersey Historic Trust, a DCA affiliate, is leading the effort and encourages all publicly owned and nonprofit-managed sites to participate in the survey.

“The Historic Trust recognizes that even our state’s most notable and celebrated historic sites and attractions have significant needs for repairs and improvements, all of which will ultimately serve the public better,” said Acting Commissioner Constable. “This survey will help the Trust identify those specific needs and begin to quantify the costs associated with making these historic buildings relevant and useful in their communities.”

The survey will begin on February 1, 2012, and run until May 1, 2012. It will pose questions about a building’s use, repair needs, projected repair costs, and, if appropriate, its participation in heritage tourism development.
