Barnegat Bay Blitz
May 9, 2012 Blitz Recap:
The rain was evident once again but not enough to keep up to 20 DEP employees and almost the entire Freehold Township DPW staff from completing the task of the day; assisting in the clean-up of the Barnegat Bay Watershed.
October 19, 2011 Blitz Recap:
A large dump site that was identified during the October 2011 Blitz was the focus of the day. The Freehold Township DPW stepped up and volunteered the services of a front end loader to assist volunteers in completely filling a 30 yard dumpster in less than three hours. A local business, Freehold Cartage, was also willing to take a portion of over the fifty tires that were discovered free of charge with the remaining tires disposed of by the Freehold DPW team.
Huge thanks go out to Freehold Township and all of the DEP volunteers that braved the weather, the woods and the ticks to collaborate to clean greater than 90% of a very large dump site within the Turkey Swamp Wildlife Management Area.
DEP staff, NJ watershed ambassadors and civilian volunteers worked with members of the Freehold Township DPW and clean communities staff to clean-up portions of the Turkey Swamp Wildlife Management area in the Metedeconk Watershed.
Overall, 15 bags of garbage, 11 bags of recycling, two dozen tires and numerous paint cans were collected. Three large dump sites were identified containing, for the most part, construction debris and appliances. These dump site locations were later forwarded to the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife for determination of an action plan.
