Barnegat Bay Blitz
Team Captain: Maria Brimat
I was thrilled to be out of the office and on the road early on May 9, with my daughter to help out with the Barnegat Bay Blitz Cleanup.
After a quick stop for breakfast, Avalon (my daughter, not the beach) and I met up with the rest of the DEP volunteers. Our group consisted of Ward Ingersoll, Joe Stefanoni, and David Froelich. After parking the car in a huge puddle, the Normandy beach resident/volunteer, Gail Birdsong pointed us in the right direction (a playground) to find various bits of litter: soda cans, Styrofoam pieces, lumber, etc.
We were picking up garbage and getting soaked to the bone when Gail arrivied with the rainboots. Avalon put them on, and announced she was then ready to stay in the car for the rest of the Blitz day with the boots on, and take the required pictures from the car of the other nearby beach cleanup sites I had been asked to be the "photographer" for. We left the rest of the cleanup team behind as we drove off to take pics of Mantoloking, Ortley Beach and Lavallette.
All in all, it was a great day…. Even with the sun coming out when we finally got home to Burlington....
October 19, 2011 Blitz Recap:
At first volunteers for the Normandy Beach clean-up were struck by the lack of litter in Normandy Beach. However, upon further examination we found plenty of small litter while combing the bayside and ocean side beaches. This included countless water bottle caps, cans and bottles, and plenty of pieces of plastic toys left behind from summer days. Volunteers included representatives from Senator Ciesla's legislative office, NJDEP volunteers and a local resident.
