REQUEST
FOR PUBLIC INPUT
ON THE DRAFT INTERIM SPECIFIC GROUND WATER QUALITY CRITERION
AND PRACTICAL QUANTITATION LEVEL FOR PERFLUORONONANOIC ACID (PFNA)
MARCH 14, 2014
The New Jersey
Department of Environmental Protection (Department) has developed and
is requesting public input for a draft Interim Specific Ground Water Quality
Criterion (ISGWQC) and analytical draft interim practical quantitation
limit (PQL) for Perfluorononanoic Acid (PFNA, CAS # 375-95-1).
The following
draft documents have been posted to this website:
• Summary
of the Basis for a Draft Interim
Specific Ground Water Quality
Criterion for Perfluorononanoic
Acid (PFNA, C9)
• Draft
Interim Practical Quantitation
Level (PQL) determination to support
Interim Specific Ground Water
Quality Criterion development
for Perfluorononanoic Acid (PFNA)
• Draft
list of references used for development
of the ISGWQC
Please note
that the draft, full Technical Support Document that
will contain details on the basis and background for the ISGWQC and additional
references will be posted by March 21 on this website. In addition, the
Department will post specific questions concerning these documents for
public comment. Comments on these documents are requested no later than
5 pm, Monday April 21, or 30 days after the posting of the full Technical
Support Document, whichever is later.
Regulatory Background: The Interim Specific Ground
Water Quality Standard process is initiated when the Site Remediation
program, or other regulatory program within the Department, identifies
the need for a Ground Water Quality Standard (GWQS) for a contaminant
that is not included in the Ground Water Quality Standards (N.J.A.C. 7:9
Appendix Table 1). The higher of the interim PQL and the interim criterion
is the numerical standard to be applied in Class II-A aquifers (N.J.A.C.
7:9C-1.9(c)).The Site Remediation Program deems the Interim Specific Ground
Water Quality Standards to be ground water remediation standards pursuant
to the Remediation Standards at N.J.A.C. 7:26D-2.2(a)1. See: http://www.nj.gov/dep/wms/bwqsa/gwqs.htm
for additional information on GWQS.
