DEP Permit Activity Report shows improvements in efficiency

The DEP has reduced permit review time and improved processing efficiency of applications for almost all programs, according to a recently released report.

"The department has made considerable progress in our goal to streamline the permitting process and improve the quality of service offered to the public. Most of the programs tracked in our bi-annual permit activity report showed significant reductions in backlogs and decreases in the average review time of applications," said Commissioner Robert C. Shinn Jr.

The Permit Activity Report is the sixth issued in accordance with the requirements of the Environmental Management Accountability Act. It provides data to the legislature about the number of permit applications received and processed for the last six months of 1994 and the average review times, as well as the published review time goals.

The increase in efficiency has been accomplished in several ways, including greater computerization, enhanced databases, and more applications filed electronically. Managers have also re-allocated resources and set new priorities to improve the level of service.
