New Regs Require Tags On Discharge Pipes |
The NJPDES rules adopted May 5, 1997 require permittees discharging effluent through outfall pipes will need to affix an identification tag as near to the end of the outfall pipe as possible. The new requirement becomes mandatory on the effective date of a NJPDES permit or by May 5, 1998, whichever is sooner. The rule applies to all outfall pipes except those that are completely and continuously submerged or are not assigned a Discharge Serial Number.
Tags should be legible, made of a durable material, and maintained on a regular basis. Tags should display the name of the facility where the discharge originates, the New Jersey Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NJPDES) number, the DEP Hotline phone number, and the Discharge Serial Number.
Questions regarding this new requirement should be directed to the Bureaus of Point Source Permitting Region 1 at (609) 633-3869 or 2 at (609) 292-4860.
