Reminder - Tags On Discharge Pipes
Now Required

Outfall

The NJPDES rules adopted May 5, 1997, require permittees discharging effluent through outfall pipes to affix an identification tag as near to the end of the outfall pipe as possible. The new requirement became mandatory on the effective date of a NJPDES permit or by May 5, 1998, whichever is sooner. The rule applies to all outfall pipes except those that are completely and continuously submerged or are not assigned a Discharge Serial Number.

Tags should be legible, made of a durable material, and maintained on a regular basis. Tags should display the name of the facility where the discharge originates, the New Jersey Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NJPDES) number, the DEP Hotline phone number, and the Discharge Serial Number.

Questions regarding this requirement should be directed to the Bureaus of Point Source Permitting at (609) 633-3869 (Region 1) or at (609) 292-4860 (Region 2).
