New Environmental Planning Director Named

The DEP recently announced the appointment of Lance Miller as director of the department's Watershed Management Division within Environmental Planning and Science. The major responsibilities of the division include directing the department's watershed management program, the water monitoring program, the estuary programs, and the water quality management planning program.

Mr. Miller brings with him a high level of managerial as well as process re-engineering experience to the job-skills earned both at DEP and the federal EPA. Recently, Mr. Miller worked on permit reform, strategic planning, and results-based management efforts as a Special Assistant to Commissioner Shinn at the DEP.

He served as the Executive Director of EPA's Permits Improvement Team from 1994 though 1997. The Team developed recommendations to improve the environmental permitting system after extensive discussions with affected stakeholder groups. Mr. Miller also worked on the CSI Printing Sector Permitting project since the summer of 1996.

Mr. Miller was the Assistant Commissioner for the DEP's Site Remediation Program and has worked for the department for over 22 years. He attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and received a Bachelors of Science degree in Environmental Sciences in 1976 from Rutgers University.
