Publishing Notices in DEP Bulletin Saves $

The Division of Water Quality saved approximately $9,000 last year by publishing NJPDES permit public notices in the DEP Bulletin. In the past, notices were published in newspapers at a significant expense. Under the current rules, public notices of permits classified as "minor" need only be published in the DEP Bulletin, while both federal and state regulations require permits classified as "major" to also be published in a newspaper.

Publishing public notices in the DEP Bulletin began with the April 22, 1998 issue. By the end of the year, 110 public notices had been published. Calculating the average cost of a newspaper public notice at approximately $100, the division saved at least $9,000 (90 notices x $100/notice) in newspaper publication costs. Besides saving the division money, the DEP Bulletin also benefits the regulated community and general public by eliminating daily searches for public notices in newspapers. Published under a set schedule, the DEP Bulletin acts as a single source for public notices.

Copies of the DEP Bulletin are distributed to all state municipal clerk offices and county planning boards. The DEP Bulletin is also available on the department's web site at: www.state.nj.us/dep/bulletin/index.html.
