HWC&E TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES
Welcome to the Hazardous Waste Compliance and Enforcement (HWC&E) Training Opportunities page. Our goal is to provide the regulated community with the information they need to better understand the regulations and maintain compliance. HWC&E initiated the training program pursuant to a component of our Strategic Plan, which requires DEP to “effectively balance compliance assistance, enforcement and education to achieve compliance and move the regulated community and the public towards environmental stewardship”.
The DEP has been offering these free seminars since 2006, and we have had nearly 1,000 attendees since that time. The “PowerPoints” section below provides a list of the seminars that have been offered along with their dates and locations.
Upcoming Seminar November 17, 2011
We are pleased to announce that the next seminar is scheduled for November 17, 2011. The subjects covered in this seminar will be Regulated Medical Waste (RMW) and Hazardous (RCRA) Pharmaceutical Waste. As always this seminar will be presented free of charge. The seminar will be held from 8:00 a.m. through 4:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the New Jersey Forensic Science Technology Center (NJSP) located at 1200 Negron Drive in Hamilton, NJ. Directions to the New Jersey Forensic Science Technology Center are available at: http://www.nj-iafn.org/NJ_ForensicTechnology_Center_directions.pdf.
We have tentatively decided on the following agenda for this seminar:
Morning Session:
“Welcome/Update on DEP Transformation & Stewardship” - DEP Speaker TBD
“Understanding the Regulated Medical Waste Regulations” - DEP Speaker TBD
“Regulated Medical Waste – Best Management Practices” – RMW Consultant/Transporter
“Regulated Medical Waste – An Inspectors Viewpoint” - DEP Speaker TBD
Q&A - Panel TBD
Lunch - On your own
Afternoon Session:
“Is My Regulated Medical Waste also a RCRA Hazardous Waste?” - DEP Speaker TBD
“RCRA Pharmaceutical Waste – An Inspectors Viewpoint” - DEP Speaker TBD
“RCRA Pharmaceutical Waste – Best Management Practices” – RMW Consultant/Transporter Q&A - Panel TBD
The purpose of this seminar is to give the participants an overview of the RMW and RCRA regulations. Although portions of the seminar may be used to help fulfill some of your training requirements it most likely will not fulfill all of them. Site specific training is required so that all employees become familiar with proper waste handling and emergency procedures at your facility. It also helps them to perform their duties in a way that ensures your facility's compliance with the regulations.
To register for the November 17, 2011 seminar complete and submit the registration information requested below. You are also welcome to bring other individuals from your business or organization, but we ask that you please complete a registration form for them as well.

Compliance Advisories
Compliance and Enforcement has been issuing Compliance Advisories since 2003. Compliance Advisories are fact sheets that deal with a variety of environmental issues. They are referred to as either an Update, Alert or Warning. For example, on March 2008 an Update entitled “DEP Develops Guidelines for Proper Disposal of Household Medication” was issued. Later that month a Warning entitled “Smoke from Outdoor Wood Boilers Prohibited” was issued.
To see all of the Compliance Advisories open http://www.state.nj.us/dep/enforcement/
This will take you to Compliance & Enforcement’s webpage. Click on the “Compliance Advisories” balloon to see them. There is also a place where you can subscribe to have future Advisories sent to you via email.
