The Hunter Education Field Day

 

The final component of the NJ Hunter Education Program is the Field Day. The day has two portions: the field session and the written exam.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR FIELD DAY

Doors open for Class Registration about hour before class start time.
Students must have:

  • Completed workbook OR HunterCourse.com certificate

  • Hunter Education Student Agreement Form (pdf, 105kb)
  • Workbook and DVD
    Complete Field Session

    Group field sessions are held outside; dress for the weather

    The field session is broken into five stations:

    1. Zones of Fire
    2. Treestand Safety
    3. Blood trailing
    4. Fence Crossing
    5. Wildlife Identification

    Those who have completed the Huntercourse.com program may bypass this portion.

    Attend the Ranges

     

    Archery Range
  • Range talk / PowerPoint presentation
  • Equipment inspection
  • Crossbow students must be able to draw their own crossbow manually or with a cocking device.
  • Live fire - 3 out of 5 arrows into vital zone of deer at 15-20 yards
  • Firearm Range
  • Range talk / PowerPoint presentation (covers shotgun, rifle, air gun and muzzleloader)
  • Live fire completed with shotgun. - Start with stationary target, then proceed to moving clay
  • This live fire exercise is to assess the student's ability to handle the firearm, not accuracy.

    Take the Written Exam

    After completing Field Session and Range(s), it's time for the written exam:

  • The test is a multiple choice scantron-style test.
  • Oral tests are offered upon request.
  • Taking a practice exam is recommended.
  • Taking the exam
  • Test is graded on the spot.
  • An 80% correct grade is required to pass
  • Successful students are issued their Hunter Education Course Completion card
  • Student with course completion card

    The Hunter Education staff wants to see students succeed. Any questions or concerns can be addressed to the volunteer instructors, facility coordinator or Hunter Education staff at any time during the day.
