The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's Division of Fish and Wildlife's 2001 Pheasant Stocking Program will begin November 10 and continue through January 1 with a total release of 55,000 birds on designated wildlife management areas (WMAs) throughout the state. The Division's Quail Stocking Program will also begin on November 10 and continue through January 1 with a total of 11,000 birds released on the Greenwood Forest and Peaslee WMAs.

"The total number of pheasants stocked statewide has been increased by 5,000 bringing the total amount of stocked birds back up to previous historic levels," said Division Director Bob McDowell. "With increased efficiency at the Rockport Pheasant Farm we're pleased to once again be able to provide as many birds as in past years."

Hunters should note that the Fort Dix Military Base will not be stocked with pheasants this hunting season due to security concerns. As a result, these birds have been re-allocated to the Stafford Forge, Colliers Mills and Assunpink WMAs.

This year hunters are asked to fill out a special survey regarding their pheasant and quail hunting efforts. Surveys will be placed on car windshields on opening day, Nov. 10 and Tuesday, Nov. 20 at selected WMAs throughout the state. The surveys will allow the Division to better understand the needs of the pheasant and quail hunter as well as evaluate, plan and improve the existing program.

The Division reminds sportsmen and women that the pheasant and quail stocking list is tentative and may change due to inclement weather. Also, individuals hunting for pheasant and quail on stocked WMAs must possess a New Jersey Pheasant and Quail Stamp in addition to a valid firearm's hunting license.
