Take a Kid Hunting Youth Bow Hunt September 27

September 20, 2014

Youth bow hunters with a valid Youth Bow License will have their own special day to harvest a deer on Saturday, September 27 as part of the NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife's popular Take a Kid Hunting Program. This hunt is an extension of the fall bow season so no special season deer permit is required.

Youths may hunt statewide for one deer of either sex on this day. They MUST be under the direct supervision of a person who is at least 21 years old and who has a valid bow and arrow license. Direct supervision is defined as both the youth hunter and parent/guardian set up together at the same location, hunting as a unit, not hunting independently. The adult CANNOT hunt or possess a bow. The adult may grunt, call or rattle for the youth.

Successful youth hunters should complete all information requested on the Harvest Report Card found on page 29 of the 2014-15 NJ Hunting & Trapping Digest, or online (pdf, 200kb) in order to have information ready for reporting.

Like adult hunters, youth hunters need to report harvested deer via the Automated Harvest Report System (AHRS). In addition to their CID#, youths need to report complete harvest location information, including Zone and County. Township and Unit information is particularly important to biologists when determining changes to deer hunting regulations. Youths are urged to have this information available before going to their hunting location to speed the reporting process when they access the AHRS, whether by phone or online.

The online Deer Hunting Location Viewer enables hunters to pinpoint their hunting location, providing them with Zone, County, Township and Unit information, and youths are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the viewer now. More information about the system is found on the AHRS page and on pages 32-33 in the Digest.
