Saturday, November 1, marks the third anniversary of the New Jersey Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife’s “Take A Kid Hunting” Pheasant Hunt. Properly licensed youth hunters between the ages of 10 and 15 can hunt on seven stocked wildlife management areas (WMAs) and licensed semi-wild preserves throughout the state in one of three hunting scenarios.
“The ‘Take A Kid Pheasant Hunt’ is specifically designed to increase a young hunter’s opportunity for harvesting a pheasant in a setting that encourages responsible and safe hunting practices,” said Division Director Bob McDowell.
Youngsters who possess a Juvenile Hunting License or a Junior-Senior Hunting License have the option to hunt for pheasants on the Assunpink (Monmouth County), Black River (Morris County), Clinton (Hunterdon County), Colliers Mills (Ocean County), Glassboro (Gloucester County), Millville (Cumberland County) and Whittingham (Sussex County) WMAs. There is no registration for these times on these areas. Hunting hours are from 2 p.m. to sunset, EXCEPT on the Black River and Glassboro WMAs when hours are from sunrise to sunset. A special Pheasant and Quail Stamp is not required.
In addition, 125 properly licensed and pre-registered youth hunters will be hunting on one of five stocked WMAs: Clinton, Whittingham, Assunpink, Colliers Mills and Millville. In a cooperative effort between the Division, the New Jersey State Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs and the National Rifle Association Foundation, volunteer hunting mentors with trained bird dogs will guide the young hunters on a pheasant hunt.
A third option and new this year, properly licensed youths accompanied by a licensed, non-shooting adult, may hunt on licensed semi-wild preserves. Youngsters can hunt for pheasants, quail and/or chukars from sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset. This is a great opportunity for hunters belonging to semi-wild preserves to introduce youngsters to the sport of upland bird hunting in a non-competitive atmosphere.
