Jorge Pacheco's Record Thresher Shark

Record thresher shark

Jorge Pacheco's state record thresher shark was caught on September 20, 2002, aboard Double Connection out of Shark River. The shark weighed 589 pounds, besting Steven Rhodes' 1997 record of 587½ pounds, caught 5 miles inshore of Triple Wrecks.

Pacheco was fishing a little tunny fillet down 100 feet with a stand-up Star rod and Shimano TLD50W loaded with 80-pound Hi-Seas Quattro Plus. The fight lasted two hours, then it took another hour to boat it. The fish measured 14 feet 8 inches in length with a 73-inch girth. Help was needed from Rambunctious out of Atlantic Highlands since it wouldn't fit through the fish door - it took five men to put it in the boat!

Congratulations Jorge!
