Endangered and Non-game Species Program – Photos by ENSP Staff – Chris Davidson, Wade and Sharon Wander, Rober Zappalorti

Map Description:

The mission of the DEP’s Division of Fish & Wildlife’s Endangered & Nongame Species Program (“ENSP”) is to actively conserve New Jersey’s biological diversity by maintaining and enhancing endangered and nongame wildlife populations within healthy functioning ecosystems. Much of the data regarding species distribution is generated through surveys conducted by our biologists. However, because our biologists cannot survey the entire state every day, the ENSP relies on supplementing the biologists’ data with data provided by the general public. This instructional poster guides the public on how to submit data to the ENSP and how that data may be used. The Sighting Report form is displayed, as well as an example of an aerial photo (an aerial photo or a topographic map must accompany the form). In addition, there is an explanation on how ENSP wildlife data is used to generate the Landscape Project, which maps critical areas of the state based on species locations as well as land-use classification. In the near future, this poster will be distributed to environmental education centers and similar locations throughout the state in order to (1) generate interest in New Jersey’s threatened wildlife, (2) increase the amount of wildlife data captured by a greater number of observers, and (3) solicit donations for the Conserve Wildlife Foundation of NJ.
