PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

Founded in 1835, the New Jersey Geologic Survey (NJGS) is one of the oldest state geological surveys. The NJGS evaluates geologic, hydrogeologic and water quality data to manage and protect water resources, to identify natural hazards and contaminants, and to provide mineral resources including offshore sands for beach nourishment.

Information provided by the survey includes GIS data and maps of geology, topography, groundwater and aquifer recharge.  In addition the data tracks wellhead protection areas, aquifer thicknesses, properties and depths, groundwater quality, as well as  geologic resources and hazards.

The NJGS provides well logging and testing, air photo interpretations, reviews of geotechnical reports.  In addition the survey maintains information on surface and subsurface investigations of sites for water resources, contamination, brownfield and open space planning and voids including caves and abandoned mine workings.

MONETARY ASSISTANCE PROVIDED:

No direct monetary assistance is provided.  However, an equivalent of three work days is available to counties and/or municipalities upon written or electronic request to the State Geologist.  Please contact the survey for further information.

PERMITTING RESPONSIBILITIES:

The NJGS provides technical evaluations and review of water allocation permit requests through the Water Supply Program
