PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The department makes over 90 of its environmental Geographic Information System (GIS) data layers, including new 2002 imagery, updated Category One Waters, Landscape data, and the Highlands Preservation and Planning Area GIS layers available via our interactive, internet mapping tool, i-MapNJ. This tool provides users with much needed information about neighborhoods, watersheds, municipalities and counties. Homeowners can locate facilities nearby. Local governments, environmental organizations, planners, and builders can identify open space, various regulatory boundaries, sensitive lands, watersheds, and much, much more.

In addition to i-MapNJ, the department provides geographic information to local governments by way of our web site as data downloads, GIS and GPS Standards, FAQs, and training opportunities. The department also participates in the public Geospatial Forum and in outreach opportunities with local governments.

PERMITTING RESPONSIBILITIES:

The department encourages the use of i-MapNJ and GIS data, at the start of a land planning effort or regulatory process, to determine if a planned project will impact areas of environmental sensitivity, such as wetlands, or be impacted by areas of environmental concern.
