PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The Bureau of Water Quality Standards and Assessment (WQSA) is responsible for the development, adoption, and administration of surface and ground water quality standards. This includes the development of water quality criteria to protect aquatic life and human health, the assignment of stream classifications, including designation of waters as Category One, to reflect existing and designated uses.  The bureau is also responsible for the promulgation of anti-degradation policies to protect and maintain the quality of surface and ground waters of the state.   In addition, the WQSA is responsible for conducting and coordinating water quality assessments of all waters of the state. These assessments are reported through the Integrated Water Quality Monitoring and Assessment Report.
