- Abstract:
-
The NJGS hydrologic properties database is a compilation of values for the hydrologic properties of geologic materials in New Jersey. The Microsoft (MS) Access97 database (hydro.mdb) includes values derived from the analysis of aquifer pumping tests, in-situ hydrologic testing such as slug injection and removal tests, lab permeameter tests, etc. The compilation is ongoing. Values are added on a regular basis as tests are analyzed and quality control is completed. The data are intended to be used for characterization of the hydrogeologic properties of individual geologic and hydrogeologic units throughout the state. Applications include prediction of hydrologic impacts of ground-water extraction, analysis of the sustainable yield of water supply wells, the rate of movement of ground-water contaminants through aquifers, etc. All data entered into the database have been examined or generated by an NJGS hydrogeologist. Quality control measures include a critical evaluation of the source of the data, the quality of the data, the testing methodology used, the appropriateness of the analytical method used relative to the hydrogeologic setting in which the testing occurred, among other considerations.
This publication originally included the look up table "hydroref" which has been removed from here and is now being published as the Hydrogeologic Nomenclature Reference Table (DGS05-3).
- Purpose:
-
The data are intended for use in characterization of the hydrologic properties of individual geologic and hydrogeologic units throughout the state.
- Supplemental_Information:
-
Data is compiled from reports by the U.S. Geological Survey, Water Resources Division, hydrogeologic reports submitted to NJDEP in compliance with regulations governing application for major water-supply-diversion permits, technical reports submitted to the NJDEP Site Remediation program for regulatory compliance with hazardous site characterization, miscellaneous hydrogeologic investigations, field studies conducted by NJGS, and other legitimate sources. The database contains values from all areas of the state. Values are obtained on an "as available" basis, so some geographic areas and geologic units are better represented in the data.
Each data set is referenced to its source, which may be a formal publication by the NJGS, USGS, or other agency or individual, or an informal report by the individual or entity that performed the test. The report title is contained in a database field, although the report name may be abbreviated; many report names were of excessive length. The report reference is accompanied by a report reference number, which is the number assigned by the entity generated the report. This may be a number referring to a formal report series (e.g. New Jersey Geological Survey Open-File Report 99-999), or a tracking number used by an entity for internal purposes. The purpose of including such tracking numbers is to be able to find the report within the files of the generating entity to obtain original data.
A paper companion file is maintained at the offices of the New Jersey Geological Survey, 29 Arctic Parkway, Ewing, New Jersey, for nearly all database entries. The companion file typically contains essential excerpts from the test report, including site maps, well records, and discussions of testing methodology and analysis. Original data files are maintained on a computer disk. NJGS analyses of test results are also included in the files. Files can be reviewed by contacting Jim Boyle, Research Scientist, at 609-984-6587, by appointment.

Data accuracy is a function of the methods used to collect data. Typically data is collected using automatic data recorders. Water level measurements are typically accurate to the nearest 0.10 feet or better. Data analysis is quantitative, subject to analysis of best fit to accepted analytical models, and the product of some degree of subjective evaluation by a qualified hydrogeologist. Data is rejected if the test conditions would not result in a reasonably meaningful value for the hydrologic properties of the hydrogeologic unit. This screening mechanism includes satisfying the following criteria: the physical setting of the test has been adequately documented; sufficient information is available to determine the location and frequency at which data was collected during testing; subsurface information on the depth of wells and the lithologic characteristics of the geologic units present is sufficient to define the relationship between points of observation to determine if they will yield properties for the unit of interest; background perturbations in water levels caused by natural cycles or external pumping can be accounted for or filtered from test data; the analytical or numerical model used in analysis of the data is designed for or suitable for the hydrogeologic conditions existing at the test site; there is a reasonable correlation between observed and modeled results; the output of the solution model is reasonable results in a regression error between observed and simulated outcomes.
