New
Jersey's Big Tree Program identifies and catalogues the
largest individual trees in the state according to species.
The printing of the 1954 listing of New Jersey's biggest
trees by the New Jersey Division of the Society of American
Foresters initiated the development of the Big Tree Program,
which is now coordinated by the New Jersey Forest Service.
Only trees that are native to New Jersey or ones that
have become naturalized (capable of reproducing under
our climatic conditions) are considered for inclusion
on New Jersey's Big Tree List. Each nominated tree is
verified by a representative of the New Jersey Forest
Service. Measurements and photographs of the tree are
taken and the condition of the tree is recorded. If you
would like to nominate a potential New Jersey Big Tree,
please complete the New Jersey Champion
Tree Nomination form.
The
New Jersey Big Tree List is now available. The
Big Tree publication is the most comprehensive listing
to date and is now available for a nominal fee of $6.
This 41 page version includes color photographs, informative
facts on each species, details on measuring big trees
and more. To order the new Big Tree publication, please
complete the order form or call
(609) 292-2532.
