You have found a big tree or you feel you have a champion tree to de-throne the current champ.  No matter what, you need to nominate it and send to us.  Big trees have been found throughout the state of New Jersey and sometimes they are determined to be the largest in the state or nation.  First, check out the current NJ Official Big Tree Registry and compare your tree to the current champion to identify whether or not you have the next champion. Next, nominate the tree. Finally, a forester or other New Jersey Forest Service staff member will review the nomination to determine its big tree ranking and champion potential and will request and conduct a site visit to officially measure the tree(s).  Please have patience, big and heritage trees are measured in the order their nominations are received and each season the number of nominations are countless considerable while our staff is limited.  Please also note that September 1st is the cutoff date for big Tree measurements and that tree measurements resume in the spring of each year.

In order to successfully nominate a big tree the following criteria needs to be completed on the nomination form and mailed to the address below:

• Common and scientific name of tree Circumference in inches (see how to measure link)
• Height in feet (see how to measure link)
• Crown spread in feet (see how to measure link)
• Nominator of Tree Information

o Full Name
o Address
o Email
o Telephone
o Date Reported
o Location of Tree (be specific include maps if possible)
o History Photograph of tree

• Big or Heritage Tree Owner's Information

o Full Name

o Email
o Telephone
