Southern Pine Beetle AerialSouthern Pine Beetle Current Actions
State Forestry Services conducts aerial surveys to detect new Southern Pine Beetle infestations. The survey data is used to notify municipalities of infestations in their town. For infestations on NJDEP owned properties, State Forestry Services marks and cuts the infested trees and a buffer before the beetles can spread and kill trees in new areas.


April 9 – April 13

Ground Verification:   Mankiller Natural Lands Trust Preserve (NLT)
State Forestry Services foresters checked thirteen sites at Mankiller NLT and found active SPB.

State Forestry Services foresters checked eight sites at Peaslee WMA and found active SPB.

Treatment  Actions:  Cut-and-leave and cut-and-remove at Wharton State Forest (SF)
New Jersey Forestry Services hired contract vendors to cut trees with active SPB populations and a control buffer on two sites in Wharton SF.   New Jersey Forest Fire Service sawyer crews suppressed active infestation on one site in Wharton SF.  Felled trees were left on site on all properties.  Suppression activity is complete on all three sites.


March 12 – March 18

State Forestry Services foresters checked forty-seven sites at Peaslee WMA and found active SPB.

Ground Verification:   Tuckahoe Wildlife Management Area (WMA) and Clarks Landing Natural Lands Trust (NLT)
State Forestry Services foresters checked thirty-eight sites at Tuckahoe WMA and twenty-four sites at Clarks Landing NLT and found active SPB.

State Forestry Services foresters marked fifteen sites at Tuckahoe WMA and seven sites at Clarks Landing NLT for SPB suppression.


February 13 – February 19

Ground Verification:   Tuckahoe Wildlife Management Area (WMA), Wharton State Forest (SF), Clarks Landing Natural Lands Trust Preserve (NLT), and Long-A-Coming NLT
State Forestry Services foresters checked fifteen sites at Tuckahoe WMA, five sites at Wharton SF, and three sites at Clarks Landing NLT and found active SPB at all three areas.  They also checked Long-A-Coming NLT and found no SPB.

Ground Verification:   Tuckahoe Wildlife Management Area (WMA) and Lizard Tail Swamp Wildlife Management Area (WMA)
Continued ground truthing at Tuckahoe WMA and ground truthed Lizard Tail Swamp WMA.   State Forestry Services foresters checked a site at Lizard Tail Swamp WMA and found no active SPB. The foresters also checked nine sites at Tuckahoe WMA and found active SPB.

State Forestry Services foresters marked two sites in Millville WMA for SPB suppression. While monitoring the recently treated Great Egg Harbor River WMA sites, foresters found a breakout site and a new site. Both sites were flagged for treatment.

New Jersey Forestry Services hired contract vendors to cut trees with active SPB populations and a control buffer at Hamilton Preserve NLT along Harbor Ave, and at Great Egg Harbor River WMA. Felled trees were left on site. Suppression activities are complete on both sites.

New Jersey Forestry Services hired a contract vendor to cut trees with active SPB populations and a control buffer at Hamilton Preserve NLT along Harbor Ave. Felled trees were left on site.

New Jersey Forest Fire Service sawyer crews cut trees with active SPB populations and a control buffer on the Chimney site at Wharton State Forest. Felled trees were left on site. Suppression activity at this site is complete.

State Forestry Services foresters checked three additional sites at Hamilton Preserve NLT. SPB was found and NJFS submitted a proposal for suppression on 10/18 for review.

State Forestry Services foresters checked a site at Hamilton Preserve NLT and determined that SPB suppression was not necessary because the immediate vicinity has few susceptible pines.

Also on 7/26, the State Forester and staff attended the Pinelands Commission Municipal Mayors meeting to discuss SPB on municipal and private lands. On 7/28 Rutgers and State Forestry Service led a field tour of a SPB infested property in Gloucester County. 12 people attended the tour.

State Forestry Services and Rutgers Cooperative Extension hosted an information session on SPB for the public on 7/19 at Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Atlantic County office in Mays Landing. 15 people attended the session. On 7/21 Rutgers and State Forestry Service led a field tour at Estelle Manor County Park. Eight people attended the tour.

Ground Verification: Winslow Wildlife Management Area (WMA) State Forestry Services foresters and Dartmouth University students checked ten sites in Winslow WMA.

Treatment Actions: Cut-and-leave at Winslow WMA 7/13-7/15 New Jersey Forest Fire Service sawyer crews cut trees with active SPB populations and a control buffer at Winslow WMA site #3 on 7/13 and 7/15. On 7/14, crews cut trees on site #2 at Glassboro WMA. Felled trees were left on site.

Municipalities Contacted: State Forestry Services sent letters to 256 municipalities within Burlington, Monmouth, Camden, Cumberland, Salem, Gloucester, Cape May, and Atlantic Counties requesting an SPB liaison to coordinate SPB suppression in their towns. 17 municipalities already responded.


July 4 - July 10, 2011

Ground Verification: Glassboro Wildlife Management Area (WMA) 7/10
Dartmouth University students checked a site in Glassboro WMA east of Site #2 and confirmed an inactive SPB population.
