High Point State Park

High Point State Park (Deer Management Zone 67)
Special Permit Muzzleloader Regulations

Designated areas of High Point State Park will be open for muzzleloader deer hunting on November 9-12 and 16-19, 2009. There will be no administration fee collected by High Point State Park again this year.

With respect to the hunt, High Point State Park is divided into two areas. The area north and east of Route 23 is open all days of the hunt (shown as Area 1 on map). The area (shown as Area 2 on map) south and west of Route 23 and north of County Route 650 (Deckertown Turnpike) will also be open for hunting all days of the hunt. Both areas will remain open to all other public use during the entire hunt period. There is no hunting on park lands located east of County Route 519 or park lands located west of County Route 653 at any time. View the map of the areas open for hunting

All overnight facilities located within High Point State Park will be closed during the hunting period. Overnight facilities are available in nearby Stokes State Forest. Please call 973-948-3820 for information and reservations.

We are pleased to be able to offer this hunting opportunity. The availability of future hunts will, in part, be based on the success, conduct and cooperation of the participants. Please help us to provide a safe and successful hunt. If you have any further questions, please call the High Point State Park office at 973-875-4800 between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

  1. No hunters are permitted in the park before 6:00 AM or after 6:00 PM. The entrance gate on Route 23 will be opened between these hours only during the hunt period. Area 2, between Route 23 and Co. Rt. 650 (Deckertown Turnpike), is not gated at this time of the year. The cabin entrance road off of Rt. 23, the road to the natural area as far as the second gate, the entrance into the DOT yard will all be open for standard vehicle access.
  2. During the hunt, hunters may park in the area immediately adjacent to the natural area (Cedar Swamp Picnic Area), the Monument Parking Lot, the DOT yard, the family cabins area, the shoulder of any park road, the shoulder of Route 23 or the shoulders of County Routes 519 and 650. Do not trespass or park on private property. No vehicle access is permitted within the natural area beyond the second gate.
  3. If an injured deer leaves the hunt area contact a park police officer or conservation officer for further guidance. The park office will be open from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM during the hunt.
  4. Hunting is permitted in the designated areas of the park shown on the enclosed maps. “Notice, no loaded guns beyond this point”, “Safety Zone” signs and, possibly, restricted area tape will be used to delineate no hunting zones. Please note that for the purpose of this hunt only, any park no hunting and/or no firearms signs remaining within Zone 67 can be disregarded. Remember that private property is adjacent to the park in several of the hunt areas. Please respect our neighbors.
  5. No construction of tree stands is permitted. Portable tree stands are permitted while actually hunting.
  6. All Division of Fish and Wildlife regulations must be adhered to in the park.
  7. November 9, 10, 11, 12 and 16, 17, 18, 19, 2009 are the only days that hunting is permitted in these designated areas of High Point State Park. Hunting is prohibited at all other times within these areas.
  8. Please do not block any gates within High Point State Park. Gates must remain accessible for emergency vehicles.
  9. Scouting of the area without firearms is permitted and encouraged before the hunt period. Park hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM at that time of year.
  10. In consideration of safety, firearms may be brought into the no hunting areas of the park during the hunt period only in an unloaded state. For the purpose of this regulation, a muzzleloader is considered unloaded when the percussion cap or priming powder is removed from the hammer mechanism and/or the flint is covered.
  11. All deer taken during the hunt shall be checked in at Fireman Dan’s Sports Lounge, 766 Route 23 Wantage, NJ 07461, (973-875-9428).
  12. Remember that an antlerless deer must be taken first.
