NONIONIZING
RADIATION SECTION
Deborah
Riggs Wenke, Research Scientist
Introduction
The Nonionizing Radiation
Section ("NRS"), of Radiation Protection Programs
was created in 1984 to enforce the provisions of N.J.A.C.
7:28-42, which addressed public exposure to sources of radiofrequency
radiation ("RF") in the environment. The Commission
on Radiation Protection ("CORP") revised Subchapter
42 in 1987 to address occupational exposure concerns, as well
as public exposure. Pursuant to N.J.A.C.
7:28-48, NRS regulates through a registration program, radiofrequency
heaters, sealers and industrial ovens which operate within a
frequency range of 300 kilohertz ("kHz") to 100 Gigahertz
("GHz").
In addition to our regulatory
role, the NRS provides information to the public concerning
RF and Electromagnetic Fields ("EMF") through distribution
of US Environmental Protection Agency, Federal Communications
Commission, and US Department of Energy documents. This
web page has been created to simplify the dissemination of this
information, and to provide additional information through links
to Internet addresses where RF and EMF information of interest
might be found.
