RADIATION THERAPY TECHNOLOGY

Scope of Practice:

Other than a medical doctor, all radiation therapy procedures must be performed by a licensed radiation therapy technologist. A licensed radiation therapy technologist is permitted to operate therapy simulators. If the fluoroscopic mode of a simulator is operated by a licensed radiation therapy technologist, a licensed physician must be in the room and directing the procedure. The following tasks have been identified within the scope of practice of a licensed radiation therapy technologist: positioning of the patient for a therapeutic treatment procedure; selecting the required filter and treatment distance; setting and delivering the treatment dose and exercising principles of radiation protection.

Educational Requirement:

Completion of a 24 month course of study in a radiation therapy program approved by the Radiologic Technology Board of Examiners (Board) or its equivalent as determined by the Board. The Board has determined that a graduate of a Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) accredited program is an equivalent program. For a list of JRCERT accredited programs, go to www.jrcert.org. If you did not complete a Board or JRCERT approved program, you must submit information contained in the examination/license appendix.

Examination Application and Information:

You must submit a complete application that meets the above Educational Requirement.

The licensing examination is only offered via computer. The examination can be taken at one of over 200 test centers across the country. The minimum score needed to pass is 75%. This examination is administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Additional information about the examination can be found at www.arrt.org and click "Examinations".

License Application and Requirements:

To be a licensed radiation therapy technologist, the applicant must meet the following requirements:

  1. Submit to the Department a complete application
  2. Be at least 18 years of age at the time of the application;
  3. Be of good moral character as determined by the Board;
  4. Complete at least a high school level education in the United States or its equivalent;
  5. Complete the above educational requirement; and
  6. Pass the New Jersey licensing examination or an equivalent* examination as determined by the Board or hold a current ARRT certification.

* In order to determine equivalency, if you passed another state's examination, you must submit proof of a current state diagnostic radiography license and information from that state agency regarding its licensing examination.
