In 1978 the Congress of the United States established the Pinelands National Reserve and called upon the State of New Jersey to create a planning agency to preserve, protect and enhance the region's unique natural and cultural resources. Since 1979 the Pinelands Commission has been charged with the development and implementation of the Comprehensive Management Plan for the Pinelands. It plays significant roles in monitoring the level and types of development that occur within the Pinelands, acquisition of land, planning, research, and education.

Highlights

• The Pinelands Commission has instituted a series of educational and recreational initiatives that are featured at thier website, such as; curriculum guides, informational materials, audio-visual programs, and recreational opportunities.

• Along with the educational programs listed above, the Commission has also created a page of activities for youth entitled the "Kids Korner" that features science experiments, a coloring book, Pinelands quizzes, and stories about the Jersey Devil.

• Also featured is the award-winning "Pinelands On-Line Curriculum Project" which is intended to allow teachers to easily acquire the materials needed to help nurture their students' understanding and appreciation of the New Jersey Pinelands.

• The "Pine Barrens Treefrog & Other Friends", the "Pinelands Poster", and the "Recipe of the Month" are other favorites.
