Investigation of Operating and Proposed Child Care /Educational Facilities
In response to legislation signed by Governor Jon Corzine in January 2007 (P.L. 2007 c.1) regarding the future health and safety of children in child care centers and educational facilities, the NJDEP-Site Remediation Program created a new unit designed to protect children from potential exposure to high environmental risk sites. The Child Care/Educational Facilities Unit, which began on June 1st, 2007, works in conjunction with three other Departments (Children & Families, Health and Senior Services, and Community Affairs) to ensure that any existing or proposed child care center or educational facility does not operate on an uncontrolled contaminated site. The Unit is responsible for reviewing Preliminary Assessment (PA) Reports (pursuant to the Technical Rules for Site Remediation, N.J.A.C. 7:26E) and for providing either a No Further Action (NFA) letter or Child Care Approval letter. Such letters are required to obtain a license to operate a new center, to renew a license or relocate an existing licensed child care center, and to obtain a building permit and certificate of occupancy for a center that is being renovated.
