The Public Water System Management and Security Section under the Bureau of Safe Drinking Water Implementation, performs the following functions:
- Review of analytical data for compliance determination for all regulated parameters
- Preparation/issuance of MCL letters
- Review of current and historical data for reduced/increased monitoring determination
- Review/modification of system monitoring schedules
- Respond to water quality complaints from the general public, including a general investigation to determine the legitimacy of the complaint and necessary actions to resolve any problems that are determined to exist
- Respond to telephone calls/emails requesting technical assistance with systems
- Field general questions
- Continuing education related to newly created regulations and revisions to current regulations
- Respond to water main breaks, including review for determination of whether or not a boil water advisory is warranted, fielding calls from the public regarding boil water notices, providing status updates to various state and local agencies, and reviewing analytical data to determine when it is safe to lift advisories
- Daily review of total coliform results, including invalidation in SDWIS, creation of repeat sampling schedule, preparation of correspondence to water systems
- Review, validate and code all other violations in SDWIS
- Assist County Health Departments
- Preparation and issuance of enforcement referrals
- Preparation and issuance of storage waivers, including review of system facilities and interconnection as part of approval process
- Perform name/address/facility inventory updates to SDWIS and NJEMS as necessary
- Respond to the USEPA on the systems found to be in Significant Non-compliance (SNC) through coordination with the county Health Departments and Water compliance and Enforcement
- Conduct activities under the Federal Public Health, Security, and Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Act. These include:
- Provide training and assistance to water systems
- Assist water systems with the preparation of their vulnerability assessments, emergency response plans, and best management practices activities
- Respond to emergencies to ensure that proper public notification, follow-up actions and sampling are conducted by the public water system
- Perform inspections regarding security measures
