Abstract:

The All Stars 21st Century Community Learning Center Program at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School provides a safe, nurturing, and engaging afterschool environment for youth. The program provides students with a wide range of academic and enrichment activities designed to improve school-day performance and support the overall growth of students and their families. The All Stars program helps students develop the self-confidence, character, and social skills they will need to pursue college, obtain employment, and interact outside of their isolated communities.

Each day, students are provided with nutritious snacks, academic assistance and time for completing homework, as well as a variety of enrichment activities. The students' enrichment activities are focused around a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) theme, with additional programming in the areas of health, physical education, character education, and visual and performing arts. The All Stars Program also includes components of parental involvement designed to enhance the students' learning experience and bring support services and educational opportunities to families.

The program at Mt. Carmel was originally built on the strong support of the school's partner, Friendship Train Foundation. Goals of the school and the foundation continue to include integrating the All Stars program with other aspects of Asbury Park community life. The program does so with assistance from a solid list of collaborators and a network of relationships with Asbury Park business, government, and community leaders. With a strong track record of success and citywide support, the program and its services will help build a new future in the iconic city of Asbury Park.
