Licensure and Credentials Office staff review applications and credentials to determine the eligibility of individuals seeking employment in New Jersey public schools, and issue licenses to qualified candidates. They also issue qualifying certificates to morticians and chiropractors; provide staff to the State Board of Examiners; and administer the provisional teacher program. Licensure and Credentials personnel assist staff from the Office of Professional Standards, Licensing, and Higher Education Collaboration in the review, evaluation, and approval of preparation programs for licensure in New Jersey and in the setting of state policy concerning licensure and program approval.
New Jersey’s Licensure and Credentials Office works under the authority of the State Board of Examiners. The State Board of Examiners is the educator licensing agency in New Jersey in accordance with N.J.S.A. 18A:6-34 et seq. and N.J.A.C. 6A:9-1 et seq. It issues all certificates that are required for public school employment. Individuals must hold the appropriate New Jersey certification in order to be employed as teachers, administrators, or educational services personnel in the public schools of the state. The State Board of Examiners renders decisions on various cases which include, but are not limited to, decisions to revoke or suspend a teacher’s certificate(s), appeals of decisions of the Office of Licensure and Credentials, and review of applications from individuals who have a criminal record.
