How Can I Get a Reporter to Cover My Story?
(Source: Service-Learning Conference, Corporation for National Service, Governors Office of Volunteerism)

  1. Call newspapers between 9am and 4pm, and ask for the person who covers human interest issues or your city/ location.
  2. When you get in touch with the reporter, explain the story, and tell him/her there are people to interview and photo opportunities available. Discuss confidentiality and make certain the reporter will use first names only, and not name people in pictures.
  3. If reporter is busy, offer to call back or fax things. Do not mail things to a newsroom!
  4. If the reporter is not interested, ask if there is another one who might be better equipped to handle this type of subject matter.

PS

  • The same goes for local television and radio stations.
