How Can I Get a
Reporter to Cover My Story?
(Source: Service-Learning
Conference, Corporation for National Service, Governors Office of Volunteerism)
- Call newspapers between 9am and 4pm, and ask for the person who covers human interest issues or your city/ location.
- When you get in touch with the reporter, explain the story, and tell him/her there are people to interview and photo opportunities available. Discuss confidentiality and make certain the reporter will use first names only, and not name people in pictures.
- If reporter is busy, offer to call back or fax things. Do not mail things to a newsroom!
- If the reporter is not interested, ask if there is another one who might be better equipped to handle this type of subject matter.
PS
- The same goes for local television and radio stations.
